OZ

We welcome you to the magical kingdom of “OZ” opening at SPAC on Fri-day May 18th. This creative adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” is written by Chris Reed and Richard Derwingson and was first presented at SPAC in 1975. Since then J.J. Lewis-Nichols has directed “OZ” twice with the addition of ‘The Munchkin Rap’ by Scott Durbin. Now in its 4th rendition, she directs again and was graciously granted per-mission to contribute a semi-song called “Glinda’s Lament.” As J.J. came to Siskiyou County in 1981 with her friend Dorothy—”OZ” has a very special place in her heart.

SPAC is doing this special show as a ‘farewell’ for our Dorothy, Katy Martinez, who graduates YHS in June, and who has been our leading lady for our last several musicals. Surrounding her for this goodbye is her dad, Dimas Martinez as the Cowardly Lion; her mom, Angela Martinez who plays Glinda the Good Witch of the South, and her aunt, Lizzi Martinez, one stalwart stage manager. Co-starring in her third version of “OZ” is SPAC president, Cindy Brown who plays the scarecrow as only one as smart as she is can, with pathos, humor, and adorability. Joining them is one of Siskiyou County’s best actors, Peter Townley as the tender Tin Woodsman.

Dorothy’s little dog, Toto, will be played by actress/dancer, Rylie Mc Clain?. Versatile Kymberly Mor-gan, seen in “Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” plays the Wicked Witch, with talented An-gelina Toney taking on the Gatekeeper. Veteran John Timm who played the Lion in the original as well as Uncle Henry the last time, now plays the Wizard; student Samantha Steyart is the Good Witch of the North, and Rhonda Lindquist with husband Gordon play Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. There are 3 sexy, kazoo-playing crows led by Akemi Dean; 17 munchkins who in this version are pairs of non-identical twins; 19 mean monkeys and 3 trees. It’s quite a cast! Heidi Martin and Bea Soule’ head costumes; Mary Carpelan leads the set crew; Josie Austin is Asst. Stage Manager with Audy Watson, our lights and sound tech. The original choreography was by Vrenda Lee with J.J., then Joan Lucas added her touches, and now Akemi Dean and Angela Martinez put in their moves. It’s a huge undertaking in our wonderful little 80 seat Dunlap Theatre at SPAC, so get your tickets early!

Our tickets at $14 are available at the Yreka

Chamber of Commerce, Nature’s Kitchen, Village Books in Mt. Shasta, and Hairazors in Fort Jones. We open Friday May 18 at 7:30 pm and play Saturday the 19th as well as Friday and Saturday May 25 and 26 at 7:30 pm with a final Sunday matinee on the 27th at 2:30 pm.

The monkeys are pretty scary so ages 5+ is appropriate. No infants are allowed in the theatre, and the taking of any videos, pictures, or recordings is prohibited.

Summer Program 2012

Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts Summer Program

SPAC will debut a summer program taught by J.J. Lewis-Nichols for acting, directing, playwriting, and singing for Broadway which may lead to year-round classes. The purpose of this program is to instruct children, teens, an adults who are serious about learning their craft.

Tuesdays at SPAC are for kids 7-13 years from 1-4:30pm; ages 14-adults from 6:30-10pm. Thursdays will be at Ft. Jones City Hall (times are the same). Each age group can attend 2 classes per week.

A preliminary meeting will be held on Saturday, April 28 at 1pm at SPAC to sign up for all who are interested in both age groups. Acting will include Shakespeare and the infamous ‘triggers.’ ‘Singing for Broadway’ includes correct breathing and ‘acting the song in character.’

These classes are free. Ages 7-10 need to be accompanied by an adult. J.J. has a BFA degree in ‘Acting’ from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She appeared twice on Broadway, and in national tours, film, Soaps, and TV commercials from 1969-1981. Currently working on her 107th production in 30 years in Siskiyou County, she is SPAC’s Artistic Director. The program starts the week of June 11 and ends mid-August. Please come to sign-ups on Saturday April 28th at 1pm. Also, please call J.J. at 468.5329 for more information.
